Top Ten Tuesday: Books on My Fall TBR

Woohoo! Double post! I haven’t double posted on the same day in a while!

Anyway, Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly post currently hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. It celebrates lovely lists, wonderful books and the bookish community. This weekโ€™s topic is Books on Your Fall To-Be-Read. I haven’t really ever posted about my TBR on the blog (beyond what I might be reading next whenever I participate in WWW Wednesday), so I’m looking forward to this!

Here are ten of the books on my TBR – what I consider my more immediate TBR, at least – in no particular order. Without further ado, let’s be off!

Wrath of the Triple Goddess by Rick Riordan: I haven’t started reading this yet, so I can technically put it on this list, lol. Gonna start reading it tomorrow, though, definitely.

How to Help a Hungry Werewolf by Charlotte Stein: I just discovered this one and it looks interesting. It also seems to have some chill October and Halloween-y vibes, and I love that when I read novels during spooky season.

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (aka: MDZS) by MXTX: This has been on my TBR for around two years now, and I honestly don’t know why I’ve been putting it off. I’ve already seen the animation and read tons of fanfiction for it and love the story… so yeah, don’t know why I haven’t read it yet.

Skyshade by Alex Aster: I’ve been enjoying hate-reading this series, and I’m gonna continue it with this next installment.

Snow Drowned by Jennifer D. Lyle: Saw it when looking at new books coming out in November 2024. It looked interesting and I haven’t read much horror/thriller in a while.

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas: I’ve been planning on reading this series for like a year now, but still just haven’t gotten around to it. The books are just so long, and I wasn’t really in the mood earlier this year, I guess.

A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers: I’ve had my eye on this since I read the first novella earlier this year. Still planning on it, I’ve just been distracted by new books and reading One Piece.

Dead Man’s Hand by James J. Butcher: This has been on my radar for a couple of years, since around the time it came out. I got the book a couple of months ago, and I guess I’ve just been waiting for the right time to read it? (I’ve also gotten distracted by other books, new or otherwise.)

One Piece by Eiichiro Oda: Of course I’m still continuing reading One Piece with my husband. We’re almost to the time skip! Planning on continuing on with all the little arcs up to said time skip next month!

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell: I tried reading this a couple years ago but couldn’t get into it and DNF-ed it. I’m thinking about trying again. We’ll see.

Monthly Wrap-Up: July Reading 2024

So even though I didn’t read quite as many books as I’d hoped, I was at least somewhat happy with my reading for July 2024. Like, I read six books – that’s not too bad.

I also still have a bit of a solid TBR going on (that I still haven’t touched, lol), and there’s some books coming out in the next month or so that I’m into, so hopefully I’ll be reading way more in August.

Anyway, without further ado, letโ€™s get into my StoryGraph statistics from last month.

July Reading 2024

๐Ÿ˜ MOODS: There were about the same amount of Moods as in June. Adventurous was of course number one, as it always is. The other three Moods were LightheartedFunny and Emotional, and they were actually pretty equal on the chart, except for Emotional.

๐Ÿ‘ข PACE: My books from last month were fast, medium or slow paced.

๐Ÿ”ข PAGE NUMBER: Everything I read was between 200 and 700 pages.

๐Ÿ“– FICTION/NONFICTION: It was once again all fiction this month. As is usual.

๐ŸŽญ GENRES: There were about as many Genres in July as in June. The Genre king for last month was once again Fantasy as is pretty much always the case โ€“ I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve ever had a month where it wasnโ€™t. The other five genres were Manga, Romance, Graphic NovelLGBT+ and Young Adult. (It bothers me that StoryGraph lumps in reading demographics with genres though โ€“ theyโ€™re not the same thing!! And these last five are definitely reading demographics.)

๐Ÿ“„ FORMAT: This particular pie graph is once again wrong. (As usual.) About a third of the books I read were ebooks, while the rest were physical copies.

โญ RATING: My median star rating for last month was 4.17. The ratings I gave were between 3.0 stars and 5.0 stars, so that pretty much tracks.

๐Ÿ“‰ PAGES READ DAILY: I read a ton during the second week of July, but that’s what happens we hen you read an entire arc of One Piece. It was my biggest reading spike of the month, as well. I also read some between the 17th and the 28th.

Wrapping Up the Wrap-Up

So yeah, even though I read six books last month, it still wasn’t quite as many as I’d have liked. I really enjoyed the books that I did end up reading, however, which was pretty nice. Hopefully I’ll read more in August, though.

I did end up having a bit of a minor slump during July, and I think it’s ’cause my husband was ready to continue buddy reading One Piece, and I wanted to read something else first. We ended up doing the buddy read of the next OP arc, and by the end of it I was kind of no longer into reading what was originally next on my TBR. Like, don’t get me wrong – I really enjoyed the Water Seven arc, it just all kinda messed up my reading moods for July. A little.

Anyway, thanks for joining me in checking out my StoryGraph stats for my July reading in 2024. Thank you also for reading, and I hope you have an wonderful day/night!

Monthly Wrap-Up: April Reading 2024

April Reading 2024

It’s once again another month, which means it’s time for another wrap-up! This is a few days later than I had wanted – I’d originally wanted to get this out last weekend. Buuut… I was out of town, you know? Anyway, this monthly wrap-up regarding my reading for April 2024 features my reading stats from The StoryGraph, as per usual.

My reading has been much better than the previous few months – even March. I read 6 books! Which is such a big improvement compared to one or two or none at all. So yeah, I’m kind of satisfied with my reading last month.

Anyway, let’s get on with the reading wrap-up!

April Reading 2024

๐Ÿ˜ MOODS: The reading Moods were varied this past month. Adventurous was of course the biggest chunk of the pie in April, but Lighthearted, Mysterious and Dark were also pretty big slices. Tense and Funny were the smallest parts though.

๐Ÿ‘ข PACE: My books from last month were all three kinds of paces: fast, medium and slow.

๐Ÿ”ข PAGE NUMBER: I read a lot of books with different page numbers. But everything I read was between 100 and 650 pages.

๐Ÿ“– FICTION/NONFICTION: It was once again all fiction this month.

๐ŸŽญ GENRES: So many Genres in April. Of course, Fantasy was the biggest one – it was the only Genre that was applied to every book I read. Manga surprised me at being the second biggest one, though I probably shouldn’t have been. The third biggest Genre was Young Adult, and then the rest of them were all applicable to one book each and were therefore the smallest lines.

๐Ÿ“„ FORMAT: This little StoryGraph pie chart is almost correct for April. I only read one ebook though.

โญ RATING: My median star rating for last month was 3.42. The ratings I gave were between 2.25 stars and 4.25 stars, with two of the ratings being 4.0 stars.

๐Ÿ“‰ PAGES READ DAILY: I didnโ€™t read as much as Iโ€™d have liked during the first week or so of April, but I really started reading after that. My highest reading peak was during the 9th thru the 16th, but I had little reading spikes after that for the rest of the month.

Wrapping Up the Wrap-Up

So yeah, I improved my reading stats for April! Just like I had intended to do. I’m hoping I read even more this month, and the months that are coming up the rest of 2024 too.

May has a couple of books releasing that I’m interested in, but I still have a couple new releases  from April that I haven’t read yet that I still might check out as well. My spouse and I are still making our way through One Piece, and are planning on reading the next arc this month too. I’m so glad we started reading it again – it’s a fun and easy read and it got me out of my slump! Though… I’ve had a bit of a mini-slump happening for the past few days, but I’m chalking that up to reading two 2.5 star novels in a row plus the going out of town thing last weekend.

So yeah, thank you to everyone for reading, and I hope you have an awesome day/night!

Reading & Recipes #4

It’s been a bit. But I love this post, so it’s definitely not going away! I love to read and I love to cook/bake, so Reading & Recipes is the culmination of two of my favorite things!

If you donโ€™t know what Reading & Recipes isโ€ฆ Well, for this post, Iโ€™m going to be posting a recipe I used recently along with a picture of the finished product, as well as discussing a book I was reading the same day a little bit. Annnd thatโ€™s it, thatโ€™s pretty much the post.

Recent Recipe: Baked Salmon Fillet w/ Garlic Herb Butter & Bay Seasoning

This is another Mar original. It’s a bit of a pricier meal than we usually have, but we saw a giant salmon fillet at Sam’s this past weekend and I was like ๐Ÿ‘€ to my spouse. I prepared it last night and it turned out wonderful. Which is especially cool, because I’ve never made salmon before.

(Sidenote: I’m sorry the picture sucks – I didn’t think to take a picture of it before we cut it up and divided it, lol. โ˜บ๏ธ)

INGREDIENTS:
  • one large salmon fillet (because this is what we got, but you can get smaller ones – you’ll just need to adjust the cook time probably)
  • some garlic butter (I just kind of winged it)
  • a little salt and pepper
  • Bay’s Seasoning
DIRECTIONS:
  1. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (176ยฐC). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil, spray the foil with nonstick spray, and unwrap salmon and lay it on top.
  2. Lightly season the fillet with salt and pepper. Heat up garlic butter in microwave until completely melted and drizzle atop salmon. Then season salmon fillet with as much Bay’s seasoning as you’d like.
  3. After oven is heated up, place baking sheet with salmon inside and bake for 20 minutes. (Make sure it’s cooked – all ovens are different! If you have a food thermometer and you like to make sure your food is cooked perfectly, use it to make sure salmon is internally 175ยฐF (~87ยฐC).)
  4. Take salmon out of oven and enjoy! If it still has skin on it, be careful while eating not to eat the skin.

Recent Reads: One Piece (Skypiea 25 – 26 – 27)

One Piece (Volumes 25 - 26 - 27) by Eiichiro Oda

Join Monkey D. Luffy and his swashbuckling crew in their search for the ultimate treasure, the One Piece.

Luffy and team must figure out a way to get their ship, the Merry Go, to sail upโ€”the Straw Hat crewโ€™s next destination is an island in the sky. It may seem like an island paradise, but the interesting characters they meet there are hardly heavenly. Soon Luffy and the Straw Hats are on the runโ€ฆ and it turns out theyโ€™re on the path to a city of gold!

I haven’t read it in a few months, but I’m still enjoying One Piece. My spouse and I have been buddy reading it, and we’re planning on finishing it. But, I dunno, I took a bit of a break after November,ย  but maybe I shouldn’t have. ‘Cause I’ve had quite the reading slump these past few months, and this might’ve gotten me out of it – as it’s a fun, easy read, with great world building, adventure and characters.

I will say that I haven’t enjoyed this super volume as much as the ones I’ve read so far. But that’s not that surprising, as I’ve noticed the beginnings of arcs have some slow parts, in order to establish and build up the rest of the current arc, as well as future plot stuff beyond it (sometimes waaayy beyond it).

But I’ve still been enjoying the rich world and hijinks, and I’m looking forward to the rest of this massive undertaking – One Piece currently has over 103 regular volumes of story published, and over 1100 chapters out. So it’s huge, is what I’m getting at. But I’ve been enjoying reading it between regular novels – between manga, books and fanfiction it all keeps reading very fresh.

So what books have you been reading lately? What have you thought of them? Whatโ€™s your favorite food, meal or dessert?

Thank you as always for reading, and I hope you all have an awesome day/night!

WWW Wednesday: 12/6

It’s been, what, like two and a half months since I left did this post? Yeah, I fell off of it for a bit for whatever reason. I don’t really know why. (Also, I know I said I was gonna do a Tasteful Tuesday yesterday, but… yeah, the stars just didn’t align.)

Anyway.

The Thing I’m Currently Reading

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

CURRENT STATUS: 22%

CURRENT FEELS: ๐Ÿซค (really bored, I think it’s too slow for me) (this is why I don’t normally go for 800+ page books) (might DNF it)

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, The Way of Kings, Book One of the Stormlight Archive begins an incredible new saga of epic proportion.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.

It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars were fought for them, and won by them.

One such war rages on a ruined landscape called the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin, who traded his medical apprenticeship for a spear to protect his little brother, has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where ten armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable.

Brightlord Dalinar Kholin commands one of those other armies. Like his brother, the late king, he is fascinated by an ancient text called The Way of Kings. Troubled by over-powering visions of ancient times and the Knights Radiant, he has begun to doubt his own sanity.

Across the ocean, an untried young woman named Shallan seeks to train under an eminent scholar and notorious heretic, Dalinar’s niece, Jasnah. Though she genuinely loves learning, Shallan’s motives are less than pure. As she plans a daring theft, her research for Jasnah hints at secrets of the Knights Radiant and the true cause of the war.

The result of over ten years of planning, writing, and world-building, The Way of Kings is but the opening movement of the Stormlight Archive, a bold masterpiece in the making.

Speak again the ancient oaths:

Life before death.
Strength before weakness.
Journey before Destination.

and return to men the Shards they once bore.

The Knights Radiant must stand again.

Luffy’s epic clash with Baroque Works pirate captain Crocodile continues, while deposed princess Vivi and the rest of the Straw Hat crew race against time to save the ancient kingdom of Alabasta. The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell

(This is something I got years ago but never read. I think I’m interested in reading it now, though)

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

Stop the Magician.
Steal the book.
Save the future.

In modern-day New York, magic is all but extinct. The remaining few who have an affinity for magicโ€”the Mageusโ€”live in the shadows, hiding who they are. Any Mageus who enters Manhattan becomes trapped by the Brink, a dark energy barrier that confines them to the island. Crossing it means losing their powerโ€”and often their lives.

Esta is a talented thief, and she’s been raised to steal magical artifacts from the sinister Order that created the Brink. With her innate ability to manipulate time, Esta can pilfer from the past, collecting these artifacts before the Order even realizes she’s there. And all of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Orderโ€”and the Brinkโ€”before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future.

But Old New York is a dangerous world ruled by ruthless gangs and secret societies, a world where the very air crackles with magic. Nothing is as it seems, including the Magician himself. And for Esta to save her future, she may have to betray everyone in the past.

Monthly Wrap-Up: November Reading 2023

November Reading 2023

Here I am. With another monthly wrap-up. As I do every month. This time it’s for my November Reading of 2023, featuring my reading statistics from The StoryGraph from that month. (Say month again, why don’t you?)

I read less, comparatively, than I did in October, but I still read a ton. I feel like ten books is nothing to sneeze at, even though four of them were manga super-volumes and one was a 20 page short story. But November was kind of busy for me at some parts, so cut me some slack? (I think December might have a few of the same problems for a few of the same reasons, ei: holidays.)

Bur yeah, I’ll shut up now. Let’s get into the wrap-up.

November 2023 Reading

๐Ÿ˜ย MOODS:ย Adventurousย was the biggest slice of pie, as it always is.ย Lightheartedย was surprising in being the second biggest piece though โ€“ itโ€™s only the second time this has happened, so far. The other ones were:ย Reflective,ย Emotional,ย Dark, andย Mysterious.

๐Ÿ‘ขย PACE:ย I read all three different kinds of paced books: slow, medium and fast. They were mostly fast and medium paced novels, though.

Wrapping Up the Wrap-Up

So yeah, November reading in 2023 was pretty strong. I’m really happy with what I was able to read though I do wish I was able to do a bit more. Ah well, we’ll see how what happens in December.

December doesn’t have any books coming out (that I’m aware of, at least) that I’m super excited about reading. Yeah, I had one on my anticipated reads releasing October through December list, but I’m not all that stoked about it. Just moderately – it looks interesting, but I won’t be upset if I don’t end up reading it. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson, though. (Well, most of it anyway. I find Shallan’s chapters to be kind of boring at the moment.)

I’m also hoping to read some winter themed fantasy books, if I can find some. Tell me your recs in the comments, please! I love reading festively!

And well, I guess we’ll all find out what else I want to read this month together, because I’m honestly not sure now. Oh wait, maybe The Princess Bride by William Goldman. I got a really nice edition last month as a gift, and I’ve wanted to read this book for ages. But we’ll see.

So yeah, thank you so much for reading and I hope you have an excellent day/night!

Monthly Wrap-Up: October Reading 2023

I don’t think I’ve ever posted a monthly wrap-up on the first of the month yet. Or maybe I’m wrong? I don’t know, and it doesn’t matter much. It’s time to begin the October Reading 2023 Wrap-Up!

I read so, so, so much during this past month. It’s my bookish peak of the year so far! I’m so happy with myself – I don’t think I’ve ever read 13 books all in the same month before! I guess this just shows that autumn really is my favorite reading season, huh?

But yeah, without further ado, let’s get on into my statistics from The StoryGraph from last month!

Wrapping Up the Wrap-Up

So October ended up being waaayy better reading-wise – and blogging-wide – for me than September was. I’m really happy that I read so much, and with the books that I ended up reading. Here’s to keeping it up in November! ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿ€๐Ÿฅ‚๐Ÿป

I’m actually really excited for the books I’m almost certainly going to read this month. For one thing, Murderbot book #7 is coming out, and it’s my most anticipated book of the year. I’m also looking forward to hate reading Lightlark AND Nightbane, the latter which is also releasing this month. And of course, I’m continuing with One Piece and I’m looking forward to the next arc.

As for anything else I’m planning on for November… Other than the beginning of the holiday season and Thanksgiving and stuff, I’m not really sure yet about anything else. I’ll probably be doing some Christmas shopping though.

Anyway, thank you all so much for checking out my October 2023 Reading stars and monthly wrap-up. I hope you have an awesome day/night!

See ya ~Mar
